Volunteer Spotlight: James McGowan

Volunteering opened up many opportunities for James McGowan, 26, including his career in the fire service. He not only volunteers as a firefighter/EMT and lieutenant at Brookhaven Fire Company, but he also works full-time as a firefighter/EMT at Tinicum Township Fire Company.

“Everything I have learned as a volunteer firefighter travels with me in my career as a paid firefighter,” said James, who also serves as Brookhaven’s chairman of the Rec Room Committee and previous chairman of the store room. “You get to meet new people, learn different ways to do the job and hear different stories from people.”

James always had an interest in saving lives and giving back to others. One of his best friends was also a member and influenced him to join the fire company 11 years ago.

“Becoming a member of Brookhaven Fire Company has been the best choice that I’ve made as a 15-year-old junior firefighter,” said James. “Volunteering makes you become someone you never thought you would be. It transforms you to be a stronger individual to do what’s required for the safety of your peers.”

Brookhaven Fire Company provides volunteers with training and gear. James obtained his Firefighter I certification and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification.

James knew he wanted to be an EMT when his dad passed away in 2021. He was working Brookhaven Fire Company’s ambulance and was an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) at the time.

“For me, being an EMT has taught me how I can provide care and comfort to the people who need it the same way I needed it,” said James. “When people call 911, you’re the person they go to when there’s a critical incident. That is why stress management and critical thinking are two skills I’ve obtained.”

Through training and bonding with other volunteers, Brookhaven Fire Company has become a second family to James.

“I have gained so many friendships and knowledge to be the man I am today,” he said.

Inside the firehouse, the volunteers laugh, crack jokes and have fun. However, as soon as the siren goes off, it’s game time.

“When we leave the firehouse, we have a duty to act in order to get the job done. We are there with expectations and professionalism,” said James.

The men and women of Brookhaven Fire Company are always looking for new firefighters and exterior firefighters. For those who don’t want to respond to emergencies, they can volunteer as contributing members, helping with community events and fundraising throughout the year.

“If you are looking for excellent training, new friendships and a way to start giving back to your community, Brookhaven Fire Company will provide those,” said James.
