Joey Yannuzzi, 23, credits volunteering at Brookhaven Fire Company to opening doors for his career.
“Volunteering at Brookhaven Fire Company was the best decision I have ever made,” said Joey, who joined as a junior firefighter at 15. “The leadership and knowledge from the men and women at Brookhaven is the best around and they have given me the best training there is. Brookhaven has shaped me not just to be a volunteer fireman but even a step further as a career fireman.”
Joey is a volunteer firefighter/EMT at Brookhaven Fire Company and currently works as a firefighter/EMT for the Baltimore City Fire Department.
“Everything you start to learn from day one as a volunteer can be transferred to a career, not only to be a good firefighter and provider to the community, but also how to be a good human being in general,” he said.
As a teenager, Joey was originally interested in the EMS side of things and two of his friends encouraged him to join Brookhaven to learn about firefighting as well.
“I immediately loved the firefighting side of things and was determined to be the best at it, leading me to where I am today in my career,” he said.
Always welcoming to new volunteers, Brookhaven Fire Company provides training and gear. No prior experience is required to join.
“Brookhaven Fire Company took me in as family right away as a teenager, like they knew me my whole life,” said Joey. “I’ve met not only friends for a lifetime but people I can call my family.”
The volunteers of Brookhaven have fun, laugh and joke with each other every day. They hold events and are involved in the community, and are highly professional and skilled when fighting fires.
“We want volunteers that love to do what we do day in and day out,” said Joey. “There is no better reward than helping your community and at Brookhaven Fire Company, there are endless opportunities to do so. Its’s the best volunteer organization around.”
